Professional cyclists check their brakes and their tires, why not their hearts?

Sonny Colbrelli suffered cardiac arrhythmia when he collapsed at the finish line Monday at the Volta a Catalunya.

That’s according to team doctors at Bahrain-Victorious, who say they are still working to determine the cause of Colbrelli’s dramatic health scare while the Italian recovers in a Spanish hospital.

“Our medical team can confirm that Sonny Colbrelli suffered from an unstable cardiac arrhythmia that required defibrillation,” read a Bahrain-Victorious statement. “The cause is still to be determined, and the Italian rider will undergo further tests [Wednesday] at the Hospital Universitari de Girona.”

Bahrain-Victorious said Tuesday that the Italian star is recovering in a Spanish hospital in the wake of his life-threatening collapse and reanimation by fast-acting Spanish paramedics. The team thanked the medical crews on the ground for assisting Colbrelli.

“The team would like to thank Borja Saenz de Cos – Emergency Nurse at Sistema d’Emergencies Mediques (Catalan Emergency Service) – for his prompt assistance at the finish [Monday] and for supporting our medical staff in the management of the incident,” the team said. Read more here.
