Science Experiment Uncovers Sudden Cardiac Arrest

A science project for St. Andrew Catholic School 7th-grader Andrew Greubel could prove to save lives the lives of Upper Makefield Little Leaguers.

Greubel recently conducted a survey that looked at Upper Makefield Youth Baseball League (UMYBL) coaches’ knowledge and their understanding of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) as well as the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in youth sports.

The results were not encouraging, according to Greubel.

Most coaches, players and parents were unaware of the incidence and prevalence of SCA in youth sports and more surprising was the lack of AED awareness and training.
