Officials are still trying to determine the cause of death of a 17-year-old athlete from Oregon who collapsed just minutes after winning a wrestling match, KGW-TV reported.

Charley Engelfried was walking off the mat Thursday night when he suddenly fell to the floor. He was rushed to Silverton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Engelfried was a junior at Dallas High School and had been talking with a Navy recruiter about enlisting in the armed forces after he graduated.

“He died doing what he loved,” his mother told KGW. “He was looking forward to this match, and he pinned his guy.”

His mother said her son didn’t suffer from any known medical issues. An autopsy is scheduled to determine a cause of death.

“He loved being active, and he rarely missed practice,” she said. “He was always proud of his coaches and his teammates.”
