David Gurganious’ life changed one year ago, although the details remain fuzzy to him.
“I didn’t feel anything the whole day. I just woke up in a strange place,” Gurganious, a 16-year-old junior at El Cerrito High, said one year after nearly losing his life during a basketball game.
Feb. 2, 2010, seemed like a normal day. Gurganious went to school and then joined his teammates for a home game against Richmond.
The Gauchos were leading comfortably, and Gurganious was sitting on the bench late in the fourth quarter when he suddenly collapsed and went into cardiac arrest.
According to the American Heart Association, it’s estimated 95 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital.
