The spokeswoman states that students must submit to physicals before participating in tryouts. This is the very reason that we claim that physicals are not enough. There needs to be a heart exam too.
SUMTER, SC (WIS) – A 13-year-old Sumter middle school student has died after suffering a heart attack following basketball tryouts.
Sumter School District spokeswoman Shelly Galloway said a staff member was with 8th grader Tiffany Amber Cleckley on Tuesday when she collapsed in the main office at Mayewood Middle School. Galloway said an off-duty medical professional administered CPR and used an automated defibrillator until paramedics arrived.
Portable defibrillators are in every middle and high school, and each student is required to submit a physical before tryouts, Galloway said. Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock said Cleckley was taken to a hospital, where she died. Bullock said an autopsy found a heart attack caused the death.
Principal John Koumas said Tiffany will be greatly missed. “Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the Thorne and Cleckley families,” said Koumas. “Tiffany was a very special part of the Mayewood family. The loss of a student, classmate and friend has had a significant impact on both our students and staff.”
Galloway said students are required to submit a physical before participating in tryouts. Counselors were at the school to help students and faculty cope with the loss.
